DrayTek, a manufacturer of routers for the many communications exchanges across the globe which utilise internet protocol (IP) telephony and business VoIP (voice over internet protocol) technologies, has been recognised with a prestigious award in its home country, Taiwan.
The ‘Taiwan Excellence’ award was given to the company by TAITRA – a body formed jointly by the country’s Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) and its Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

Just over 10% of residential and business premises still lack quality, high-speed broadband provision, according to a new survey.
Moreover, the survey, from specialist communications research organisation Point Topic, claims that the 13% of private homes and enterprises across the UK which currently have access to a broadband capacity of only 2 MB or less are unlikely to see any improvement in the near future.

A recent report has identified an increasing decline in both the number of UK business telephone landlines and the use of such lines – with the take-up of business VoIP (voice over internet protocol) cited as a significant factor influencing this trend.
The report, by UK communications regulator Ofcom, reveals that in 2011, telephone landlines among businesses stood at 9.4 million – a drop of 3.1% on the previous year. The report points out that this decline has been a feature of the telephony market now for four years running.

Digium, the company behind the open source internet protocol (IP) telephony enabler, Asterisk, has revealed the names of two new senior executives in charge of the technical overseeing of the Asterisk product.
Digium says that Matt Jordon has taken on the role of project leader on Asterisk, whilst Mark Michelson has become the platform’s technical lead.
The announcement follows the recent departure from Digium of one of the organisation’s celebrated leading lights, Kevin Fleming – a name associated over many years with the successful on-going development and global deployment of Asterisk.

American Dental, one of the largest private sector dental companies in the US, has overhauled its business phone systems by replacing them with a single state of the art service offered via a host business VoIP provider.
The award-winning practice, which employs 200 staff across the New York area, says its previous voice communication network – a combination of a central exchange at its head office and separate business phone systems at each of its ten surgeries – had become cumbersome, costly, and increasingly difficult to manage.

A new report has predicted that combined global VoIP (voice over internet protocol) revenues for 2012 will amount to a total of $65 billion.
The report, by independent media and research organisation, Visiongain, claims that, in contrast, 2012 is likely to be seen as a year in which the market for traditional land-line based systems hits an all-time low.
The report is also understood to undertake a detailed analysis of how the VoIP market is likely to progress between now and 2017.

A new and influential report claims that demand for hosted IP telephony services among companies in the US and Canada is likely to increase substantially over the next few years.
Whilst IP (internet protocol) telephony has already made significant inroads in the field of enterprise communications – particularly in regard to voice calls made and received via business VoIP (voice over internet protocol) channels – the new report, by independent analysts Frost & Sullivan, says that the attraction of hosted IP telephony is now widening to larger firms.

A new report has identified an increasingly widespread deployment of session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking among businesses, with the desire to capitalise on the cost benefits of the technology being cited as a primary incentive.
The global study, the ‘2012 SIP Trunking State-of-the-Market Report’, carried out by Webtorials Editorial and Analyst Division, found that SIP trunking – a technology which facilitates the reception and transmission of business VoIP (voice over internet protocol) signals without replacing conventional landline-based business phone systems – is now in place in almost a third of all enterprises surveyed.
