Digium, the organisation behind the open-source software enabling the operation of countless internet protocol (IP) telephony business phone systems across the globe, has been recognised with a prestigious accolade at a major recent US trade function.
The accolade – the 2012 Global Trade Award – was given to Digium at the recent World Trade Day gathering in Huntsville, organised by the North Alabama International Trade association (NAITA), in conjunction with the Madison County Commission.
The award is presented annually by NAITA to a North Alabama-based organisation considered to have succeeded in making a significant contribution to global trade activity.
Digium was presented with the award on the basis of the company having helped establish over 1 million Asterisk-led IP telephony systems in over 170 countries since it first began operations in 1999. It was also noted that in 2011, 35% of Digium’s customer supplies constituted exports overseas.
The successful applications of IP telephony worldwide via Asterisk – has particularly helped contribute to the enormous growth in business VoIP (voice over internet protocol); whether through direct premises-based applications or via the less capital-intensive route of the remote host services of a business VoIP provider or VoIP reseller.
Receiving the award on behalf of Digium were the company’s chief executive officer, Danny Windham, and its founder – and now chief technical officer – Mark Spencer. The award was presented by Jimmy Cahill, unit brokerage manager for Panalpina, which was the recipient of the award in 2011.
Commenting on receiving the award, Mr Windham said:
‘We appreciate being recognised by NIATA for our success in international trade development. Considering that international trade helps open the doors to growth for companies of all sizes, it is important for businesses to consider that route as part of a healthy, strategic development plan.’
